Having a baby generates more bills from more providers than almost any other hospital experience. The facility fee for a vaginal delivery in Tampa ranges from $2,500 to $15,000. That is one of several bills. Knowing what is coming makes it manageable.
Count the bills you will receive
You will receive separate bills from: the hospital (facility fee, what this tool shows), your OB or midwife (professional fee), the anesthesiologist if you get an epidural, a neonatologist or pediatrician for the baby's assessment after birth, and possibly a hospitalist if a physician manages your care during labor.
The anesthesiologist is the most commonly out-of-network provider in the delivery suite. Under the No Surprises Act you are protected from balance billing, but confirm your in-network cost-sharing amount applies before you assume you owe nothing above your deductible.
Your hospital choice is constrained but not fixed
Your OB delivers at specific hospitals. If you want to deliver at a different hospital, you need an OB with privileges there.
If you are in your first or second trimester and price is a consideration, ask your OB which hospitals they have privileges at and compare facility rates. Switching is easiest early in your pregnancy.
What an OB global package means for your deductible
Most OBs bill prenatal care and delivery as a global package. You pay one professional fee covering all prenatal visits and the delivery.
This means your deductible may apply to the global package at the start of your third trimester, and then you also owe the hospital facility fee deductible when you deliver. Two separate deductible applications from one pregnancy is common. Budget for both.
